Wilderness
Inspired by the percussion ensemble tradition, Lee composed an original work entitled, “Wilderness” to represent the necessity of finding hope amidst trials and tribulation. José Valentino contributed a soulful and mesmerizing solo as keyboardist. The work incorporates West African hand drumming traditions that intersect with the accompaniment of the marimba, alluding to Lee’s Liberian heritage and artistic expression.
Revelation 4: His Glory
Lee’s solo piano album, “Revelation 4: His Glory", is inspired by the New Testament book of Revelation chapter 4 which describes the following things: crowns, the seven spirits of God, the four living creatures, thunder and lightning, the twenty-four elders, and a sea of glass. The track titles of this album reflect the embodiment of the content within this biblical text. As a man of faith, Lee seized the opportunity of creating an album that provides a nexus between his artistry and devotion.
In the Twinkling of An Eye
Derris Lee and José Valentino's album "In the Twinkling of an Eye" is a notable entry in the jazz fusion genre, incorporating elements from global and Latin music traditions. With Lee’s contributions as drummer and percussionist, the album showcases a blend of intricate rhythms, melodic improvisations and complex arrangements, drawing from various musical styles to create a unique listening experience. A Carpenter from Chicago
Lee recorded this jazz album with Donna E. Scott, an internationally-renowned jazz vocalist. This project reimagines jazz standards and classics from The Carpenters, highlighting Lee’s creative prowess on drum set. His contributions to this album was recognized by the Global Music Awards and DownBeat Magazine in 2022.
The Unctioning
"Derris Lee and José Valentino's composition 'The Unctioning' is a captivating piece that metaphorically represents the ritual of anointing one’s head with oil in biblical tradition. This original work draws inspiration from the two-fold properties of the oil, symbolizing both restoration and the divine mandate to fulfill one’s purpose in the Kingdom. Through a simplistic melody, meter of 7/8, and harmonious interplay, the composition evokes a sense of completion and empowerment, inviting listeners to embrace their God-given calling.
The Way of Wood & Water: Live Performances on Classical Marimba
This solo marimba album encapsulates Lee’s soulful and expressive interpretation of J. S. Bach’s cello suite in G Major and Adam Hopper’s original work entitled “Ghost Garden.” Lee’s performance was recognized by the UK Bach International Competition for technical mastery, baroque style, and soulful rendition that best depicts the music for the classical audience.
Bishop Lee Blues
"Bishop Lee Blues" is a heartfelt single by Derris Lee and José Valentino, dedicated to Lee's father, a senior pastor. The song reflects the challenges faced during this journey, embodying a spirit of perseverance and hope. Musically, "Bishop Lee Blues" features a brisk tempo that energizes the listener while weaving together elements from various genres, showcasing the artists' innovative fusion style. The incorporation of jazz, blues, and possibly Latin influences creates a rich tapestry of sound that enhances the emotional depth of the piece. The vibrant rhythms and melodic lines reflect both the struggles and triumphs associated with ministry work, making it a powerful tribute to Lee's father and his commitment to serving others.
A La Fiesta de Música Vamos Todos
Lee served as percussionist and keyboardist for “A La Fiesta de la Música Vamos Todos." This vibrant Latin children's album was designed to engage young listeners through music and cultural storytelling. The album features a collection of lively songs that celebrate music, dance, and the joy of coming together for a festive occasion. This project was recognized as Best Latin Children’s Album by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (LARAS) in 2022. Additionally, the album was highlighted in the LARAS’ 25th Anniversary exhibit in the Paley Museum for Media in New York City from September 13th to November 3rd, 2024.
Embarkation: The Resiliency of Humanity Amid COVID-19
In the wake of a worldwide pandemic, Lee and his artistic cohort found a need to express their human experiences from a quarantined world. The result was a contemporary classical album that incorporates communion amongst artists coping with the uncertainties of the post-COVID era with an optimistic perspective looking forward.
